Camogli

A fishing village with a great artistic charm due to its pastel colors decorated facades: a place to visit at least once in your life!

Our Base

The seaside village of Camogli is the ideal place from which to start beautiful kayak excursions along the western side of the Portofino park or to organize entertaining Street Orienteering.

We may organize multiple activities thanks to the various partnerships established on the territory.

Not only in the summer months, but especially when the area is less crowded, paddling along these shores, reaching Porto Pidocchio, the Tonnara, Punta Chiappa and San Fruttuoso is an experience to be tried at least once in life.

We also organize Street Orienteering activities in the village to discover the area, having fun and socializing. Orienteering activities are particularly suitable for groups, for example team building activities, school trips and children.

How to reach us

The activities we organize in Camogli have different starting points that we agree directly when we organize the experiences. Camogli is easily reachable by train, by bicycle, on foot from Recco, by motorbike or by car. Camogli is a small village with few parking spaces, we always recommend using public transportation!

Explore the area

A village of sailors and fishermen with pastel-colored houses, Camogli is one of the most famous and best preserved seaside villages in Italy.

Located on the eastern coast of the Golfo Paradiso, Camogli is also part, together with Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure, of the Regional Park of Portofino. Characteristic of the village are the traditional black and white “risseu”, typical mosaic made of the same pebbles that can also be found on the beach.
From here, Outdoor Portofino offers marine and land activities all year round to discover the western side of the park.

Nature

Camogli is the western gate of the Regional Park of Portofino. From here, both by sea and by land, you may discover breathtaking views and enchanting stretches of coastline, including San Rocco, Punta Chiappa, San Fruttuoso and Portofino.

Punta Chiappa represents the border between the southern and western sides of the promontory. Thanks to its characteristics and its position it is a very popular site for diving and snorkeling lovers.
The western slope of the promontory is characterized mainly by by formations of marly limestone from the Mount Antola.

History

Camogli boasts an illustrious tradition in sailing activities, which is still preserved today in the Maritime Museum Gio Bono Ferrari. In the mid-1800s, in fact, Camogli was called “the city of a thousand white sailing ships”, one of the largest naval powers in the world (the fleet of Camogli was superior to that of Hamburg). Thanks to the economic growth due to maritime trade, at the time many complexes were built, such as the theater, the hospital and the kindergarten.
Fortress of Camogli was Castel Dragone, tower of defense also used in defense of the Saracen invasions, dated back to the 11th century and later expanded. The adjacent church of S. Maria Assunta originally from the 11th century still preserves many works of Ligurian artists. Castle, church and annexed houses were built on the island of the village, today joined to the mainland through Piazza Colombo, built on the water of the port.
The origin of the name of Camogli – “Camuggi” in dialect – has several interpretations, among the best known include “cà a muggi” which suggests stacked houses, a characteristic that emerges above all from the sea, or “cà da muggé” the house of wives, indicating the prevalence of the female population while the men were embarked engaged in the work of fishing.
