Description

Explore the biodiversity of the marine park of Bergeggi Island with a kayaking and snorkelling experience and immerse yourself in an environmental monitoring activity. A local guide will guide you to discover the natural wonders and the historical and archaeological remains hidden in this place.

“Deep Blue” is a shared project that is being developed in two protected areas of Liguria and aims to deepen knowledge of the marine ecosystem.

From the beach of Spotorno, kayaking observation routes and snorkeling activities start to reveal the richness of biodiversity within the Marine Protected Area of the Island of Bergeggi. This Citizen Science activity will be carried out thanks to the use of an underwater camera and the iNaturalist app to educate and involve everyone, promoting respect and protection of our sea.

A briefing on safety at sea, on the behaviours to have within a protected marine area and on the citizen science protocol to be used, will be the beginning of this adventure. On board the kayak we start from Spotorno beach paddling towards the island of Bergeggi, a small cone of limestone rock covered in Mediterranean scrub which is only 250 m from the coast. Here you can find the most varied herbs of the terrestrial-maritime flora with some exclusive species of Liguria.

From the island you continue along the cliffs, small inlets and caves of the area where with a mask and snorkel you can admire the seabed of Posidonia oceanica meadows and a large number of marine organisms.

The excursion allows you to discover a place rich in biodiversity, history and legend. An opportunity to admire the beauty of the area and protect it through knowledge and monitoring of the present species.

Bergeggi

The stretch of coast between Bergeggi and Spotorno has a very varied morphology; it alternates small beaches and short headlands with sheer cliffs, in which the sea has dug small caves.
Opposite, not far from the mainland, stands the small Island of Bergeggi, a suggestive cone of limestone rock that reaches 53 meters above sea level. The island and the rocky coast in front have been included in the Bergeggi Regional Nature Reserve since 1985.
It seems that in ancient times the island was connected to the coast by a narrow rocky strip, which was then demolished by wave motion. Today it appears rocky and steep, only partly covered by Mediterranean vegetation.
